How Long Should Your Instagram Captions Be?
Is there an ideal length for captions on Instagram? Does it differ between Reels and feed posts? Will it impact your reach or your conversions? And are people really reading those long captions??
There are so many questions around caption lengths for Instagram posts. So let’s break it down!

Captions on FEED Posts
When I say “Feed” post, I’m talking single images and carousels.
Typically, using only a single sentence as a caption is not ideal as they don’t convey enough information to the person seeing the post. These also do not allow you to really connect with your audience and demonstrate any expertise, personality, or value.
In general, your captions should be 2-3 short paragraphs for these types of posts. It should be long enough to convey a clear message and relevant details, but short enough to be easily and quickly consumed.
When you’re crafting your caption for your feed posts, the photo(s) should be capturing their attention in the feed but the caption should do the WORK. It should take the context and purpose of the photo and enhance it, providing the necessary details and personal touches to interact with the reader.
What if you want to go longer?
Nothing is stopping you! Well, except the Instagram limit of 2200 characters for a caption length (not words, 2200 total characters). So, if you’re wordy (like me) or have lots of info to share, feel free to write those longer captions.
Captions on Reels
Your Reels strategy will be different! There are two tactics for Reels and their respective captions
Neither one of these Reels strategies is necessarily better than the other. It depends on your goals, your content, your audience, and your strategy.
How to determine what works for you
Like many things in your business, your Instagram captions are a part of your brand. If your audience is used to you being verbose and descriptive, it makes sense for you to have longer captions. If your audience is used to short videos and quick tips from you, then it makes sense to keep your captions shorter.
And if you’re not sure, then start testing!
Try out some longer captions and see if they work. Try out some shorter captions and see if there’s a difference. But whatever you test, give it at least 6-8 weeks of consistent content to really decide what is best for you.
