All the New Instagram Post Size Details You Need to Know

Yes, Instagram has officially gone away from the squares. We knew it was coming, and here we are. We may not like it, but it is what it is. And eventually, we’ll all get used to it!

If you want to adapt to the new 4:5 profile format for the feed, here’s everything you need to know.

You can quickly view a summary of all this on my Instagram post or keep reading below!

Instagram limits you to uploading a 4:5 image (not any taller). BUT, the new profile grid is actually a 3.8x5 (or a 3:4) format which is slightly taller than the 4:5. You can’t upload a 3:4 image so it will crop in the upload to a 4:5 but then, in your profile grid, the image will be slightly cropped, taking off the left and right margin.

Yes, this is annoying.

I recommend you upload your images to a 4:5 size, ideally 1080 x 1350 pixels. This will optimize for upload and in the feed.

BUT, make sure you do not put text right up to the left or right borders of the image. Shift your text just slightly away from the edges so that it doesn’t crop off in the grid.

Is the crop that big of a deal?

Honestly, for most, you probably won’t notice or care. But it’s there, and if your text is butted up to the very left or right margin, you will notice it cut off in your feed. If you’re trying to sync multiple images together to make a cohesive row on your profile grid, you’re going to notice this for sure.
