Instagram just rolled out a new feature: you can edit the audio on photos and carousels after you’ve posted them. Not Reels — this one is photos and carousels only.
Here’s why that matters. Maybe you posted and immediately realized you picked the wrong audio. Maybe you want a different part of the song. Maybe your boss or your client saw it and said, “Why did you use that audio? We don’t like it.” Or maybe the audio was there yesterday and gone today — licenses expire, tracks disappear from the library. Whatever the reason, you can now go in and swap it out. Super easy.
I’ll be honest, though: this would be a much bigger deal if it worked for Reels, because audio actually drives Reels performance. Nobody’s skipping your photo because the audio isn’t playing. People look at photos the same way with or without sound, and they swipe through carousels either way. So is this the most critical feature Instagram’s ever shipped? No. But it’s here if you need it, and there are legit use cases, like an older post that suddenly resurges in popularity and you realize the song is six months outdated.
Here’s how to do it:
- Go find your post.
- Tap the two-line button at the top (yes, Instagram swapped the three-dot menu for a two-line button on some accounts; it’s one of those weird partial rollouts).
- Tap Edit. You’ll land on the edit screen where you can change your caption, location, all the usual stuff.
- Look at the audio section. If you see the track name with an arrow next to it, you can edit it. Tap it, and that opens the audio library, where you can browse trending, recommended, or search for a specific song.
- Pick your new audio, tap the checkbox to save, and you’re done.
One caveat: this hasn’t rolled out to everyone. On one of my own accounts, the option just isn’t there. If you don’t see the arrow, or it’s grayed out, you can’t change the audio on that post. Why Instagram does these staggered rollouts, I don’t have the answer. But if you’ve got the arrow, you’ve got the feature.
That’s it. Super simple.
These new features often require strategic planning and organizational context.
