We're into the new year and hopefully things are going well for you. You've got your strategies in place for the year and are working towards your goals. And while we spend so much time planning ahead, we often forget to update our profile photos. Fortunately, you can quickly and easily update your profile photo with Instagram!

Chances are you're using an old profile photo. You either found an image you liked and stuck with it or you paid someone a bunch of money to take your photos a long time ago and keep using that same professional photo.

Believe me, I get it. We all get stuck with old profile photos. You're busy doing other things and taking the time to update your profile photo isn't high on the list of priorities. But I think we owe it to our fans and customers to update our profile photos at least once a year.

The reality is that you change. Whether it's your hair color, your style, or just good old age (I know, we'd all love to look 25 forever), you don't look like your old profile photo anymore. Part of being "social" in social media is sharing who you are. But if your profile is 3 years old, is it really you?

I also totally understand the financial commitment it takes to have a professional set of photos taken. It's hours out of your day (when you could be working) and costs a ton of money to get a good photographer. Of course, you get what you pay for. If you have the ability to pay a great photographer to do your photos, by all means, go do it! But if the reality for you is that you just can't afford a good photographer, take out your phone and use Instagram!

That's right, create a new profile photo with Instagram.

It's so easy, it's cost effective, and you can even have fun doing it. Recruit a co-worker or a family member to help you out. Find a time that works for you and choose a good location. You can use your office, a local park, a city landmark, or just a plain backdrop. Pick out a great outfit that represents you, your brand, and your style. Take a series of photos - close up head shots, mid-length shots from the waist up, and full body shots. You should be able to take a bunch of photos within only 15 minutes!

Then find your favorite image or two and upload them to Instagram for editing. The great thing about Instagram is that you don't need to be a Photoshop expert to touch up your photos! Play with different filters and settings to produce the best image to represent you this year.

If the lighting was a little dark where you shot the photos, filters like Amaro, Rise and Valencia help brighten up dark areas. Ladies (or gentlemen), if you want to take a couple years off, try Valencia (this is a personal favorite of mine when taking selfies!). Depending on your style, you can use a variety of filters which will add a vignette style or add either a blue or gold hue to your image. If you want to blur out your background, use the tilt-shift function (the teardrop) to add a blur to select areas.

You can literally create a professional looking profile photo with Instagram in just minutes!

Once you've created your new profile photo, add it to all your social media profiles for consistency. And just like that you have quickly and easily updated your social media profiles and freshened up your look for the new year. And best of all, if you want to change your profile again in a couple months, you can use Instagram once again to create another great image!

  1. Jenn, what a great idea. I hadn’t thought of that. And I was thinking of having a professional photo done this year as I haven’t updated mine in a few years now. I also have a big birthday coming up and thought it would be perfect timing. I will have to try out your Instagram idea soon. Thanks!

    1. Thanks Lisa! I’m glad it got you to think of trying something new. Try the Instagram route and if it doesn’t work for you, you can always still go the professional route.
