I recently started working as a independent contractor helping small businesses connect and establish an online presence marketing through social media…Many times I’m asked about Instagram and how they can really give people a visual of how there business works (insight). But, what I’m running into is growing there fan base…It seems not a lot of people are interested in the pictures given….Now, the company i’m helping out now has no marketing team, so i guess i took that roll…i have many ideas to really push there brand, but as a single social media manager, plus the package they signed up for gives many limits to my creativity…i want to bring in an animator, photographer…and just really turn this company up! and give the customers what they want to see….not the other way around!

    1. Hi Stephen! Congrats on the new venture 🙂
      I wish you the best of luck in moving their company forward. It isn’t easy when you have so many ideas but are constrained by resources or revenue. Do the best you can and help them see the benefits. If you can show positive changes, they may be more inclined to boost the budget to help you meet the bigger goals you have.

    Recently, I’ve been approached by a local small business to help with managing their social media accounts. The owner currently has active social media accounts (Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram) but lacks the time needed to post regularly and maximize her reach, thus why she approached me. She is wanting to hire out someone who can take over her social media accounts. I lack any marketing experience and only understand Pinterest and Facebook through my personal interactions, not promoting a business. I’m eager to learn how to use social media to promote her business. What resources do you offer or recommend that could guide me into assuming the aforementioned role?

    1. Hi Kristine! Congrats on the new position and I wish you the best of luck with this new opportunity.
      First and foremost, social media is about much more than just posting content. I applaud you for looking to learn and improve your skills.
      You need to have a strategy in place, goals and expectations, understand your audience and what they want and need, and create a content strategy (including what to post and when to post). Social media will fill the roles of customer service, sales, marketing, and other business functions. Having a broad understanding of these implications will help you use social media successfully.
      If this is a position that you are taking on in the immediate to near future, I highly recommend you work with a social media professional who can train you directly on how best to utilize the tools and platforms for this business. Investing in your skills and training will help you in the position and increase your value to the company.       Otherwise, you will need to commit to spend a LOT of time reading books, blogs, and listening to podcasts to find the information you need to really understand social media marketing. There are plenty of resources out there to help learn how to use social media marketing effectively and I’d be happy to direct you to some of those if needed.
